These Two Glow in the Dark Alien Toys

Daily writing prompt
Describe an item you were incredibly attached to as a youth. What became of it?

Late at night and I can’t sleep, so I might as well answer another daily prompt question before it resets in less than an hour.

I don’t know how I got these two, but I had glow in the dark alien toys that I would play with religiously. Whenever I had time to play, I would go down to my basement and run around the room with them in my hands, playing imaginary scenarios in my head with those two being the actors in it. Whatever I was into at that time, those two played the roles of what I wanted them to be. Either a certain character in a TV show or video game, or something completely made up but was similar to a show or video game. These two little alien toys did it all.

I can’t believe I found a picture of them. I had the one on the far left and the one right next to it.

My older brother’s bedroom was downstairs in the basement as well; when there were times that I would go downstairs to play with those toys, he would just shut the door for privacy. This would happen for a few years, until he eventually moved out with his now wife, but by then, I wasn’t playing with them anymore. They would bring those times up whenever my family would tease me about my “imaginary friends”, about how I would go down there and play while they were in his room, hearing it all.

While this may seem weird, it was me just playing around with my imagination and building that creative mind I always wanted to share with others. I don’t do this now by the way…

Eventually I got older, and the things that interested me at the time were not toys like this. My dad used to run a garage door business from downstairs in our house (yes, where I would play too), and occasionally, he would have to bring in a dumpster to throw some extra garbage out. Usually throwing out garage doors and stuff around the house we wanted to get rid of. I’m not a hundred percent sure what happened to those two toys, but I think it’s safe to say that they made their way into the dumpster one of those times we had it. I’m not one for cherishing things like that; I’m quick to throw things away like that the moment I realize that I won’t ever use it anymore.

There are moments like this, I would think about those times at my parent’s basement, running around with these two and creating whatever story it is I wanted. Some days, I just want to go back in time and relive those moments, while others, I would go back to try a different way of expressing my creativeness, in a form of art that is. Maybe if I did that, I probably would’ve had my family tease me less on being weird to them.
