In a Digital World

In what ways do you communicate online?

There are numerous ways anymore that someone can communicate with someone else online, whether it be by email, chat forums, social media, or live streaming services. Most have changed for me over the years. Some that became completely obsolete, like Myspace and AIM (AOL Instant Messenger), while others I wanted to step away from, like X (formerly Twitter). But there are a few that I use now that have replaced the ones that I stopped using.

Discord has been my main form of communicating with people that I have met over the years online. A lot of the friends that I have made, came from podcast communities that I shared the same interests with. Most of those Discord servers are from niche podcasts that I listen to involving video games. The others are a more general geekery hub for us all to talk and nerd out about our hobbies. Some gaming servers I’m in, I would like to replace with book and writing communities, just because I barely talk in those servers, and they wouldn’t care if I left.

For what I use with work, besides email applications, we use Zoom for our team meetings and chat platform. I also use it personally for sessions with my therapist, and get-togethers with the writing group that I’m in. If it was not for the pandemic, I would’ve never used this as much as I do now. It’s been very helpful for me at work on getting answers from coworkers or saves me a trip to my sessions when I can do it from the comfort of my own home.

Using WordPress is another form that I’m starting to get more involved with on talking to others online. I’ll write my posts to share with others and check out to see what other people are writing about too. Good thing for the tag feature because I can narrow it down to topics that I would like to read up on and interact with.

I write on here a lot, but I need to work on my interaction with others more. That’s a goal this year for me, to get more involved.

Other than those that I use for personal and professional purposes, I do have social media accounts that are mainly to check up on my friends and family back home. I’ll see what they’re doing and maybe throw in a “Congratulations” or press the like button for them. Nothing too engaging on there, been like this for a few years now.

Who knows what I’ll use five years from now. Hopefully, WordPress is still around, and I get to continue to write more here for everyone.
