Something that I think about when it comes to science fiction — is that there are a lot of subgenres in science fiction that have “punk” at the end of it! I swear I’m learning a new one at least once a month. Whether it’s a niche or a big one, each has its following. Because of that, I feel like I’m missing out on new worlds people are creating and stories being told.
We have cyberpunk, steampunk, dieselpunk, biopunk, aetherpunk, splatterpunk, and many more that can be overwhelming when you look at the big picture of it. Most, if not all, have a variety of media created for the matter: books, videos, games, you name it — they just about have it.
With these subgenres I learn about, I get into the bad habit of feeling like I need to get involved. Whether I participate in communities and read whatever I can, anything. Then would stop following up on it after a few weeks to a month out. But I’m constantly reminded of a new genre of this when I view something like Kickstarter or WordPress.
Earlier this week, I saw a trailer for the upcoming city-building survival game Frostpunk 2 and thought, “Is that another subgenre I’m finding out now?!” From what I gathered, it’s just the game, that’s it; there might be books that I’m unaware of, but I believe it’s only a video game at the moment. It sounds like a great setting — a Dieselpunk-style battling the freezing weather and snow. The developers were on to something here!
I’m amazed at how much has come about in the science fiction subgenre to have that naming style. There are to be more coming around, and I wonder how different it will be from the ones that have been out now. As long as people keep creating, the possibilities are endless.
