I Can Get A Lot Done in the Morning

Daily writing prompt
Are you more of a night or morning person?

If I were to guess what I see in my area, about 70% of the people are more night owls than they are early birds. When they can get a lot of the things they want to be done later in the day before calling it a night. As for me, I prefer the morning, and some days, I benefit from more of the people who prefer nighttime.

I typically don’t need to start my day until 8:30 A.M. for work. So if I wake up at 7:00, or even 6:00 A.M., I have a few hours to spend doing what I need to do before logging in to work. What does help is that I work from home four days a week, so all I need to do is make sure I’m in my office five minutes before my starting time. Since my wife has to go out to work and leaves early in the morning, I’m alone in the morning, which gives me that time with no distractions. That’s when I can clean up whatever was left the night before, read a few chapters of a book I started, or write for the day. All of that I can do early in the morning, and leave my nighttime to just relax and not feel like I’m missing out before bed.

When I go running, I prefer running in the morning over the afternoon or evening. There are a few benefits when running in the morning, where no one is out when I’m out, and I feel great after I’m done. This is more of me personally, but I dread passing by someone on the trail when I’m out running. If it’s not my voice sounding all over the place when I alert them that I’m coming up behind, there’s also the chance I scare them. Sometimes, it’s a lose-lose situation. That doesn’t happen in the morning because only a few are out with me, and by this point, we’re regulars on the trail. And once I’m done with my run, I feel accomplished and awake, by the time I’m at my desk for work.

Since I don’t go out to bars or any late-night activities, the desire to stay up late isn’t what it used to be. My wife and I were out with her family last Friday at a bar, and I spent most of my time yawning and ready to go to bed when it was only 9:00 P.M./21:00 P.M. I couldn’t hang with the night owls anymore, but if we were up at six in the morning, I would be ready for that easily.

Maybe five years ago, my answer would’ve been different. But I see more pros than cons in morning over nighttime.
