A tidbit about myself is that I like to change things up in my life. Whether big or small, I want to switch up a routine that I have been following and try something new. It keeps it exciting for however long it may be, and I fight off the boredom I would be dealing with by doing something as minor as sitting somewhere else to write.
For example, I go to work once a week, and for a while, I take the route that avoids going on to major highways. It usually takes longer to get to work, but I would rather not take the highway if given a choice. And if I leave for work at a specific time, avoiding the highway is the faster route because it bottlenecks on the highway, and I’m stuck in traffic. But if I do get ready for work and see that I could take the highway and have a shorter drive, I’ll do it. It’ll be driving through a different part of town, it’s quicker in time, and it’s a new thing in my routine.
Technology is something I tend to change things up on. It could be switching from playing my Xbox to my Nintendo Switch, using a MacBook to now using a Windows laptop, using my phone for videos, or using a tablet as my primary handheld device. Eventually, I got bored of using the same thing over and over, so I decided to try something else for a change, see how it feels, and decide if going back to what I was previously using was the better option. Sometimes, I waste my time, but I figure it out along the way and know for certain.
This idea for this post is because I decided to start a new writing project last week. Normally, I would write on the Scrivener app, but at that time, I decided to open up Microsoft Word and write there. A new writing experience on a different piece of software, there are benefits to this, but mostly, it’s a change of scenery. However, three chapters into the story and before I got too much into the weeds, I sat down today and decided that this project would be better off on Scrivener. So, I opened up the app, created a new project, copied everything I wrote on Word, and pasted it to Scrivier.
After moving everything over, I thought of how much I switch things up just for a change of pace; I eventually returned to my normal routine because I was comfortable there. I enjoy diving into something else, even if it’s for a couple of days; the boredom goes away, and then I’m back to what I’m comfortable with.
Hopefully, I’m not the only one who goes through spurts like this with everything just to feel something new for a change.
