August’s prompt for 53-word story was, “cycle.” Please enjoy the two stories I wrote that fit the theme of a cycle.
On Par
Tee off.
Slice into the woods; call it brushing the dust off. End with a double bogey.
”I hate this game,” you yell.
Next hole: another bad hit.
The ground pays for your frustration. You’re ready to quit.
You finish on par.
”I love this game,” you cheer.
On to the next hole.
His Promise
He unfolds the broken-down letter and reads it to a
”My dearest Maribelle.”
He reads the promises he made, his voice cracking in every line as new drops layer the page.
He ends by kissing the headstone, ”Till death do us part,” before returning home. He’ll reread the letter for her next year.
