I have to quote a scene from one of my favorite shows, Ted Lasso. If you haven’t watched it and have Apple TV+, I highly recommend it!

At the end of season two, and I’m trying to be vague to not spoil anything, one of the characters wanted to take the opportunity and run their own business. When talking to Leslie Higgins (the man in the quote above) about what their boss will think about the news, Leslie told them, “A good mentor hopes you will move on. A great mentor knows you will.” This is one of the many great quotes that Ted Lasso offers through all three seasons, and Higgins here is one of the kings of great quotes on that show.
This is nothing but the facts here. A great mentor knows you will succeed, because they are there to help you grow and root for you all the way to your accomplishments. Sure, they may be upset to see someone as you move on, but in their minds, they knew that you were going to move on and go out to do great things, they just weren’t ready to lose a good person as you. This is signs of a great leader, or mentor, if someone above you does not share that trait, then they’re more of a boss than a leader, and there’s a difference between the two.
Now I want to watch this show again.
