That We Will Be Back

Bloganuary writing prompt
If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?

We love our dog, and we know he loves us too. But I wish he understood that when we leave for a bit, we’ll be right back.

The first four years that we got our dog Chance, he never really was home alone for long. We had our next-door neighbor help watch him during the days we went to work, and even times when we went out for a bit. She was really helpful those four years watching him. There have been times where he had to be home alone, and he was absolutely fine. No whining, barking, nothing. That was until we moved away to where we live currently.

Early on after we moved, he was having a very hard time being home alone while my fiancé and I had to go to work. No complaints from our new neighbors at the time, but they have mentioned that they can hear him barking a lot while we would be gone. Weeks went by, he did get used to our new home, and eventually our neighbors didn’t hear him as much. But now, he does not like watching us leave at all. We have to give him something to keep him occupied, enough to let us leave without him noticing.

The damage Chance did shortly after moving to our new place.

I’d just want to let him know that we’ll be back, and he doesn’t need to worry. Sometimes, I will only be gone for an hour max, but he can throw a fit if he sees me leave, even if my fiancé is home too. He hates watching any of us leave. When we get back home, he’s napping on the couch, or the bed, so it’s like him getting worked up is for nothing because he’ll just sleep while we’re gone. Just would love the leaving part wouldn’t be such a hassle at times.

  1. Our dog, Aurora, has extreme anxiety whenever we leave. I don’t like to, but I put her in her crate while we are out. It helps keep her from jumping on / knocking down the kids upon our return, and she can’t destroy anything while we’re out.

    1. Thankfully, our dog Chance is a Chihuahua, Jack Russel mix, so his height isn’t an issue with pushing anymore. But he can get too excited at times.
