I don’t know if it’s me, just telling myself this, or I’m trying to figure this out. But, one of the things I’ve been finding out is that writing short fiction has been more of my style in writing. Whether it’s a simple poem, micro fiction, or flash fiction, I’m enjoying the feeling of being able to write a story in just a few words.
There’s the enjoyment I get when I sit down, type a 100-word story, finish, and work on a different story right after. I can write about pirates, then change it up to space exploration. It’s great. I don’t have that obligation to “finish that novel.” That’s not to say I’m not working on anything big; I am writing a novella-style story at least. But I like to throw a few smaller ones out on here.
Keeping it short has been something I always considered when I would talk to Yessica about anything. It can be about something I watched, what happened at work, or how my night with my friends went. Most of the time, I tend to ramble on, thinking that she needs to know this little bit of information, only to have her interrupt me with, “Can you just get to the point?” While that would hurt my feelings when she would say that, I realized she was right. There is a way for me to tell her that same story without the need to ramble on. So, before I would even talk to her about what happened, I self-consciously go over what I need to tell her and plan to keep the story short.
The above is one thing that made me think of why I’ve leaned more toward short fiction with my writing. To tell a story with just enough words and not feel like I’m dragging it on. We’ll see — I’m still learning that part.
